TN fishermen of six districts to avoid Sri Lankan waters

Fishermen of six districts in the state of Tamil Nadu who held a meeting at Jagadapattinam near Pudukottai have decided to avoid entering the Sri Lankan waters beyond the International Maritime Boundary Line (IMBL).
A decision was taken at the end of the discussion held by the fishermen of Ramanathapuram, Tiruvarur, Thanjavur, Nagapattinam and Karaikal on Thursday night. They felt that all the steps should be taken to ensure smooth fishing operations, The Hindu reported.

N. Kuttiyandi, president of the Mechanised Boat owners’ Welfare Association, who presided over the meeting, said the meeting also discussed various issues, including the steps to be taken for the release of 38 fishermen detained by Sri Lanka.
It urged the Central and State governments to take steps to retrieve the boats and nets seized by the Sri Lankan Navy. A follow-up meeting would be held at Nagapattinam on December 10 to work out a strategy for carrying out fishing without any problem.
