Agreement on common candidate

An agreement has been reached over fielding a common candidate at the forthcoming presidential election, the National Movement for a Just Society led by Ven. Maduluwawe Sobhitha Thera says.
Speaking after a special discussion held at the Kotte Naga Viharaya yesterday (07), the Thera has told that it was agreed to field a common candidate under a common symbol.
"Many changes would take place in the next few days. On Monday, we will hold a media briefing on this regard with all parties, the Thera has said.

Despite their different political agendas, the parties have agreed to set aside their differences and secure the victory of policies of the National Movement for a Just Society, the Thera has added.
Common candidate, later
We will state as to who the common candidate is after the Presidential election is declared. All we say is a common policy, common candidate, common symbol and a common colour... That's all."
The National Movement for a Just Society, which held discussions with the United National Party, the Janatha Vimukthi Peramuna and the Democratic Party in the last few days, has also held discussions with former President Chandrika Bandaranaike Kumaratunga and Jathika Hela Urumaya last morning (07).
Karu?
Meanwhile, reports say that at yesterday's discussions, several opposition parties have suggested to name UNP Leadership Council Chairman - Karu Jayasuriya as the common candidate.
They have been of the opinion that Karu Jayasuriya would be able to secure the support of all opposition parties.
