Samagi Jana Balawegaya (SJB) MP Buddhika Pathirana said that there are deficiencies in the data issued by the Disaster Management Department and the District Secretariats regarding the number of families and individuals affected by the floods in Matara district.
Addressing a press conference held at the office of the Opposition Leader yesterday, MP Buddhika Pathirana expressed suspicion about whether this is for misleading and reducing expenses for relief.
He further pointed out that there are contradictions in the statistics released about the number of people affected by disasters in several Grama Niladhari areas in Kamburupitiya, Thihagoda, Kirinda, Akuressa and Devinuwara. Pathirana said that although the salt barrier built in the Nilwala River was a project with good intentions but due to the changes made to the project since 2020, it has become a project that may cause serious damage to the agricultural industry as well as the daily life of the people of Matara.
