Decisions on environment should be scientific – Sajith

Opposition Leader Sajith Premadasa said that decisions regarding the environment should be made scientifically and data about animals, plants, and human resources is extremely important for that.

Premadasa said this yesterday (10) at the Sectoral Oversight Committee on wildlife, environment and natural resources.

The Opposition Leader said that the recent increase in interest in the environment sector is positive and because of this, the number of groups looking for information and data is also increasing.
  He said that it is problematic whether the physical and human resources have been developed in the subject compared to this interest and therefore the capacities of the Wildlife Department dealing with wildlife issue should be developed.

The Opposition Leader emphasised that even if green economy and policies are talked about if they are not implemented in practice, they will be of no use.

Also, he demanded that workers who have been working as volunteers for more than 10 years should be absorbed into the Department.

The resources of the Wildlife Department can be utilised to find the money needed for this, he said.

The lands belonging to the department can be opened to tourists and generate income through them, the Opposition Leader said.
